SOUND & SELF
FREE WEEKEND IMMERSION
sponsored by the YBCA
Four Sessions on the Experiential Nature of Sound: Body, Breath, Heart and Mind August 3-4, 2013 The Forum, YBCA Free to the Public. Attend one or all four! RSVP to save your spot! Sound & Self is a weekend of workshops that connect us to the power of resonance. Sound impacts every level of our experience every day, yet our awareness of sound is becoming increasingly secondary to the predominant sense of sight as we move forward into the technological era. Drawing on ancient Indian sound practices and contemporary research, vocalist and yogic sound instructor Ann Dyer leads us through a sonic adventure that reveals how deepening our relationship to sound can bring greater physical health, mental clarity, and emotional well-being. Workshops are free to the public. Attend one, or all four! |
Sound & Body
Sat, Aug 3, 10-11:30 AM
Sound is a full-body experience. As anyone who has ever experienced a sonic boom knows, we perceive sound vibration with more than our ears. Our entire body produces sound as well, from the sound of our breath to the sound of our own thoughts. In this workshop we will experience the body as an instrument of sound, from its response to chronic noise and rhythm to vocal embodiment.
Sound & Breath
Sat, Aug 3, 12-1:30 PM
The breath supports the expression of self through voice. Tantric texts point to the breath as being the subtle vibration of the sentient being and a constant reminder of our finest essence, as each cycle quietly repeats the sound hamsa (“That I am”). In this session, we will discover the intimate relationship between sound and breath.
Sound & Heart
Sun, Aug 4, 10-11:30 AM
From the giggle of a baby to the beating of a drum, sound can inspire us to fall in love or go to war. Our innate emotional response to sound gave rise to the sophisticated Indian musical systems of rasa and raga, and its spiritual tradition of bhakti, or devotional chant. In this workshop, we will experience how sound touches the heart, arousing the many shades of human emotion.
Sound & Mind (& Beyond)
Sun, Aug 4, 12-1:30 PM
Our ability to think (or not), to concentrate, and to remember are all affected by sound. Sound has been harnessed in India as a mental technology since the memorization of the Rig Veda through chant over 4,000 years ago. And for millennia. yogis have used mantra—sanskrit for “an instrument of the mind”—to experience dimensions of awareness beyond mind. In this workshop, we will use sound to achieve increased mental clarity and to possibly perceive subtle levels of awareness beyond it.
